The conflict is pretty visible in my city. The local Synagogue is under constant police protection (although to be fair that is nothing new) and you can see a lot signs, graffiti demonstrations and the like daily. Violence has, so far, kept at a manageable level. The conflict is, to me personally , most visible within the left wing groups, because those are the ones I have closest access to. The schism between Anti—Imperialists (pro Palestine) and Anti-Germans (Pro-Israel) is widening, but many of the non hardcore Anti-Germans are beginning to question their blind support for Israel. Even Anti-German newspapers like
Jungle World are slowly pivoting to criticism of Israeli government figures, even though they remain staunchly Zionist (which is not surprising).
The Pro-Palestine demonstrations attract a uniquely wild mix pf crowds in Germany. From your every day person shocked by the humanitarian situation, to hardcore Anti-Imperialist groups, Muslim groups protesting out of solidarity (with these you have the full spectrum of muslim life in Germany, from progressives to straight up Hamas supporting Islamists), Querdenken (Anti-Vaccine) Groups who believe in a global jewish cabal that is responsible for Corona and so on and on. From what I can tell there have been numerous times where these groups clashed, for example I know of one situation where members of Querdenken wanted to join a demonstration organized by a local Antifa Group, which ended in a shouting match and would have, without a doubt, escalated quickly had police not intervened.
Then there is the police, who themselves have been accused of police brutality and partisanship by every side at this point, no matter if Pro-Israel or Palestine and there are certainly cases where the accusations are warranted. It is a cluster**** of epic proportions and will only get worse, but it also has its small funny moments. For example there is a wall near where I live where the graffiti changes twice a week between an Anti-Imperialist and a Anti-German group. If I remember to do it, I’ll take some pictures.
This is mostly focused on the German left. There is also a big conflict in the center of the political spectrum as well as within the far right, but it is harder for me to make out the conflict lines there, as I have no access to the right wing.
