Isn't that why you put crazy clauses/mandates in? "See, we dropped this demand, so what are you going to compromise upon?"

Re: Russia-Ukraine War
and Russians would reply equivalent to "you and what army?"
for this to work you have to show that either Russia or Russian economy can be fully collapsed, not on its last legs like right now

Re: Russia-Ukraine War
I got to listen to that snippet of what Witkoff said.
Russia will agree to Article 5 equivalent provided by US and Europe, but not to Article 5 provided by NATO.
There are two possibilities, either Lavrov was too drunk at that party or Trump administration is on drugs.
EDIT
more so, while every English news source is quoting Witkoff, none of pro Kremlin sources mention the security guarantees when they quote him.
perhaps he should read Putin's actual statement at the end. I can link it if you want to read that word salad. Putin talks about US wanting to understand Russia's security concerns, the real reason for the conflict and the "pain" that Ukrainians have caused. He does talk about security for Ukrainians after the war - that's the demilitarization topic. No mention of US or Europeans providing that.

Either this make no sence, because this would be basically the same...or they are counting on it that this will be fake/unbinding guarantee, possibly even that majority of countries would chiken out of it.

Re: Russia-Ukraine War
feel free to call me out as wrong, but since Russians never made a statement to that effect and for last 8 years said the opposite, this is indeed nonsense.
Trump also just posted (again!) that Ukraine is at fault for this whole war, so indirectly confirming what I said by repeating Russian propaganda.
Witkoff should sober up.

Re: Russia-Ukraine War
I thought it was clear, Russia knows Trump is totally TACO. The US can make a security guarantee saying "if you touch Ukraine again after this agreement, we will intervene", but Putin has already seen that trump's threats are all hot air.
After a few years, maybe less, Russia will attack again and America will say "if you don't stop within two weeks we'll sanction you", knowing fully that they'll do no such thing. Trump's two weeks never expire.

I suppose yes, Russians could have said that to Trump in private, and not ever admit that publicly, knowing that they don't have to honor this and Trump will never follow through

Something tells me that Zelensky, Trump meeting didn't go the way that Trump thought it was going to go.

Re: Russia-Ukraine War
it's been hours and not much of interest has been said. Except
If that means that Coalition of the Willing will have troops on the ground, that's a progress. It is of course exactly what Kremlin said they wouldn't allow, but Europe should never ask the permission
Russia's and US fake commitment to security guarantees are taken literally by everyone else it seems. Take what Trump's admin said and go full throttle seems like an interesting strategy. Make something fake a reality
https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/ ... n-08-18-25One of the key outcomes was an agreement for the 30 countries dubbed the “Coalition of the Willing” to work on security guarantees for Ukraine and begin coordinated efforts with the US.
“That’s really important for security in Ukraine, for security in Europe, and for security in the United Kingdom,” Starmer said.

It's all just BS from trump he is flapping, flopping and flipping around like a fish out of water he has gone from a deal is on the books, it's up to Zelensky to accept it, to, well you know Putin might not accept a peace deal. Like I said yesterday, that meeting did not go the way it was meant to go for Trump, he even had to phone Putin during the meeting to let Putin know it was going the way they had planned for it to go. Just another total farce and even more lies from Trump, but then what do you expect it is Trump after all.

Re: Russia-Ukraine War
I didnt check this propaganda source, weird, I thought the more official one would fire this first
https://ria.ru/20250820/voyska-2036406555.htmlBritish Prime Minister Keir Starmer said earlier that a "coalition of the willing" is ready to implement the plan to deploy a contingent to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire. At the same time, the Times newspaper reported that London is reducing the scale of plans to deploy "peacekeepers" in Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Russia does not see any possibility for a compromise on the issue of deploying foreign peacekeepers in Ukraine. He noted that in such a case, Western countries will not want to agree on the terms of a peaceful settlement, since this contingent will create "facts on the ground." The Foreign Ministry called the plans of some EU countries to send "peacekeepers" to Ukraine a provocative step aimed at maintaining unhealthy illusions among the authorities in Kyiv.
Do you happen to have Witkoff's number to tell him he hallucinated talking to Russians?Observe wrote: ↑Sun, 17. Aug 25, 19:40 NATO membership is impossible. However, special envoy Steve Witkoff says that Putin has agreed to security guarantees for Ukraine.Hopefully, Ukraine will accept the reality and acquiesce to a non-NATO solution. Ukraine will also have to go along with the loss of land that Russia has taken. This has been obvious for a very long time and is as good as it is going to get.We got to an agreement (from Putin) that the United States and other European nations could effectively offer Article 5-like language to cover a security guarantee...Putin staunchly opposes Ukraine joining Nato, and Witkoff says this arrangement could be an alternative if "the Ukrainians could live with that".

Russia attacked a civilian factory in western Ukraine owned by US company Flex Ltd, causing a massive fire and wounding at least 19 people.
Local authorities said that at around 4:40 a.m. local time, two Russian cruise missiles hit the company’s premises in Mukachevo.
“It was a regular civilian business, supported by American investment, producing everyday items like coffee machines,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Thursday on social media.

Re: Russia-Ukraine War
So according to Reuters these are the key Russian demands for a peace deal:
- Ukraine gives up the Donbas (currently they still control around 12% of it)
- Other frontlines get frozen
- Russia gives up the small parts of Kharkiv, Sumy, and Dnipropetrovsk they control
- There will be no western troops stationed in Ukraine
- No NATO membership for Ukraine
- If Ukraine refuses, the war will continue
